The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported that as of August 9, 2018, 436 people from 15 states have become ill from a parasite linked to salads sold at McDonald’s locations. At least 20 people with the parasite have had to be hospitalized. The Kishish Law Group is now taking cases from people that became ill after eating a McDonald’s salad.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reported in late July that packages of romaine lettuce and carrots distributed to McDonald’s contained Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that can cause an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. According to CDC reports, illnesses started on or after May 20, 2018.
What are the symptoms of Cyclospora infection?
The FDA says that symptoms of Cyclospora infection include, but are not limited to:
- Frequent diarrhea, occasionally with “explosive” bowel movements
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Stomach cramps or pain
- Bloating
- Increased gas
- Nausea
- Fatigue
Less common symptoms include vomiting, body aches, fever, headaches or other flu-like symptoms. If left untreated, symptoms may persist for as long as a month and may return multiple times. If you or a loved one has these symptoms, you should contact a health care provider to report these symptoms and receive treatment.
Where have potentially contaminated McDonald’s salads been sold?
People who said they consumed salads and have lab-confirmed instances of Cyclospora said they purchased salads from Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Other individuals from Connecticut, Tennessee, Virginia and Florida purchased salads while traveling through the above states.
In early July, McDonald’s pulled salads from about 3,000 restaurants after reports from some states of increased Cyclospora infections. McDonald’s list of states where potentially affected restaurants reside included all of the above states as well as Iowa, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia.
The FDA says that anyone who consumed a McDonald’s salad in one of the affected states may be at risk for developing cyclosporiasis.
